Afytos

Pictures of Afytos

Afitos is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Chalkidiki. It is no wonder this small village attracts so many tourists each year. Among its many advantages are its good highway access and its close proximity to the airport of Thessaloniki, located only 60 km away. Afitos is the only traditional village of Chalkidiki. Tourism has not altered in any way its character and the local community, headed by Vassilis Pavlis, sculptor and ex-president of the village, has made great efforts to preserve the village's unique color. The traditional houses and shops of the historical center, most of them built of the local porous stone, and the narrow stone-paved streets and alleyways create a unique atmosphere. The village, perched on a 50 meters high cliff overlooking the sea, offers the visitor a splendid view. At the foot of the cliff, sandy beaches and crystal clear waters spread out under the sun. Nowhere else in Greece can you swim in such warm waters. The beaches are all easily accessible and within walking distance of the village. Another popular attraction of Afitos is its many good restaurants and bars. It is worthwhile visiting Thea Thalassa to eat fresh fish while enjoying the splendid sea view from Afitos' cliff, Sousourada to taste delicious local specialties prepared by Chef Nikos Katsanis, Moudounou and Avlito taste superb Greek mezes, and to Stroumbouli for meat dishes. If you want to drink something, there are plenty of bars. You can go to Koutsomylos and listen to carefully selected music under the moonlight or to Fortouna, a mainstream bar, which sometimes stays open well past dawn. Lithos plays Greek and foreign music. Energy has Internet facilities and TV screens showing all the live and latest sporting events. There are also two beach bars: Pounta and Liossi.
